Gobblerfest 2012

Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth on Friday, September 7! We had such a great time informing and educating our community at Gobblerfest and a HUGE thanks for welcoming us!

Here are a couple pictures we took at Gobblerfest and visit our Facebook to view more!

We call this the "draw with your foot" game (very straightforward)!
Need:
- sketch pad
- markers (one for every person - so no one shares!!)
- feet

We played for shirts! I announced to each pair who ever could draw the best #Hokie bird or #Hokie football player wins a free t-shirt...somehow everyone wound up getting one though...

Virginia Tech is Going Green

After VT's wide receiver, D.J. Coles, PCL ligament heeled the team had their hopes up. Soon after however, linebacker, Tariq Edwards, suffered a stress fracture in his shin which hasn't been healing well after the mishap earlier this year. The hopes for an injury-free season starter diminished even more after left guard, David Wang, sprained his left ankle.

Wang received surgery and was placed in a green jersey (no contact) for a recent closed mini-scrimmage. Last season Wang was named most improved offensive player only to break his foot in the second game of the season!

Although Wang seems to be doing better, a number of other players were in green jerseys which several are suffering from a hamstring injury.

Good luck, Hokies! We hope your injuries heal correctly and quickly!!

VT's Bruce Taylor Still Injured

Last November, Bruce Taylor, a Hokie Football Player, suffered a Lisfranc Sprain which is common for football players.

"After 12 weeks in a walking boot, a limited spring practice schedule that kept him out of contact drills and a second planned surgery in April that removed one of two screws inserted into his foot, Taylor was fully cleared to start running again just before players dispersed for the summer." - Roanoke Times

Taylor says at first he didn't want to believe he had an injury and fortunately after surgery has been told his foot is fine and "he can do anything."

Virginia Tech Triathlon Club

Thanks to the Virginia Tech Triathlon Club, Dr. Kate of Shenandoah Podiatry was able to spread more information on foot and ankle care (especially now that it's training season)!

Listed are a few of the questions members asked:
  • Member: Should I scrape off my calluses before a run?
  • Dr. Kate: I find them to be beneficial, especially before race day. If you remove them, you might get blisters! You can certainly scrape off a couple of layers if you prefer, just don't make the skin raw and therefore vulnerable

  • Member: I have tendonitis on the top of my foot, what can I do about it?
  • Dr. Kate: Ice your foot 10-15 minutes a few times a day, stretch, don't tie shoes too tight, and try stretchy laces that you can get a Dicks Sporting Goods.

  • Member: Can you correct your overpronation?
  • Dr. Kate: There are certain ways where you can make you foot over pronate, less. You can train you foot to midfoot strike instead of heel strike as well as wear orthotics.

Got Feet? Your Guide to Sports & Running Injuries

Shenandoah Podiatry offers two free books, "Got Feet? Your Guide to Sports and Running Injuries" and "Got Feet? A User's Guide to Foot and Ankle Health." Today I'd like to take an excerpt out of our running book, as more and more people are slipping on their running shoes to hit the Huckleberry trail in this beautiful Blacksburg weather!

"Chapter 10: How Do I know if I Need Orthotics? Foot pain is not normal and should not be ignored. It can lead to complex problems that can affect the functioning of other parts of the body, including the hips, knees and back. Foot-related problems are often treated very successfully with functional orthotic shoe inserts.

Orthotics are prescribed to:
  • Reduce pain
  • Provide support
  • Prevent or slow down the development of a foot deformity
  • Provide better positioning of the foot, knee and hips
  • Improve the overall biomechanical function of the body"
As you can see, Shenandoah Podiatry is here to help. We want you to be an informed patient, knowing what we can do to help and how. To receive your free book, head to our website and request either one or both!

VT Foot Fumble

It was grim news for VT Football fans when they heard Nick Becton, starting left tackle, sprained one of his right toes. He is going to be on the sidelines for an undetermined amount of time and there is no guarantee he will be able to be back on the field for Sept. 6th - the big season opener against Boise State.

For those of you thinking - "Toe sprain? He's seriously out for that? Walk it off man!" Here's the definition of a "sprained toe" according to Aurora Health Care. "A toe sprain is caused by a partial tear of the ligaments that support a toe. Ligaments are strong bands of tissue that connect bones to each other." Now it sounds a little more serious than you thought, huh?

Toe sprains can be caused by any number of things, from stubbing your toe to suddenly stopping a run and causing your toe to jam into the front of your shoe. And people MOST at risk for this type of injury are people playing sports, dancing, moving on rough ground, or people with poor coordination or the tendency to be clumsy.

If you think there is any possibility that you may have a sprain of any kind, you need to immediately see a doctor. They will need to run tests and determine a course of treatment which will definitely include rest from whatever activity lead to the injury.

Check out this site for more info on this particular injury. Toe Sprain

You can also check our our website if you are not sure what is causing your foot discomfort or pain. We have some great info on several different common ailments that may be the culprits. Shenandoah Podiatry

Podiatric Medicine Helping Dorenzo Hundson and the Virginia Tech Hokies

Dorenzo Hudson has been a star on the basketball court for the Hokies this season but unfortunately even stars fall sometimes. On January 16th at the Florida State vs. Virginia Tech game, Hudson suffered from a stress related bone bruise and has been dealing with the injury ever since.

Even still, this junior point guard has not let that affect the amount of points he has been racking up at every game. Just one week after he bruised his bone he scored the winning basket at the Boston vs. Virginia Tech game.

He has kept his game points very high to everyone’s delight. This injury has not caused Hudson to miss a game yet, although he did have to miss practice this week and sit out a few minutes during the game against Maryland on Feb 27th. Hudson has been a huge part of the Hokies success this season and this injury has kept everyone on the edge of their seat, just hoping that it won’t take their star out of the game.

Luckily with trainers, podiatric medical equipment (an orthopedic ankle brace and an immobilization boot), rest, and an amazing amount of determination on Hudson’s part, he has kept his game strong and will hopefully carry the Hokies to the NCAA championship.
